Troy's Fatherhood

Troy has two sons, Cory and Lyons. I would say that to his son Troy is a pretty mean father, but for his sons own good. For example when Lyons came by, he asked to borrow some money and Troy’s reply was, “What I tell you Bono? The only time I see this n***er is when he wants something. That’s the only time I see him”. (Wilson 16) He didn’t want to loan the money to Lyons for multiple reason but eventually he does. The reason this makes Troy angry because Lyons is a thirty four year old man and still comes by asking for money constantly. Troy thinks Lyons needs to take a break with his musical ‘career’ and get a job to take care of the more important things. “Yeah I got it. You know why I got it? Cause I don’t throw my money away out there in the streets. You living the fast live... wanna be a musician… running around in them clubs and things… Yeah, I can see that! It don’t matter how you gonna eat… where your next dollar is coming from.” (Wilson 18) So as you can see Troy is doing it for Lyon’s good, he needs to grow up and be independent. Then when it comes to Cory he also comes off mean. “I thought we had an understanding about this football stuff? You suppose to keep up with your chores and hold that job down at the A&P.” (Wilson 35) But we find out that he is strict about having a job instead of relying on sports is because back in his day he relied on sports but that didn’t work out for him, it even set him back a little.  Especially in their society because they treat black athlete’s way different from white ones “If they got a white fellow sitting on the bench… you can bet your last dollar he can’t play! The colored guy got to be twice as good before he get on the team.” (Wilson 34) I do think that Troy is a strict father, but only to get guide them toward success.

  1. I like the direction of your post, focusing on Troy as a father, you bring up a good point about how he is just trying to guide them toward a better future.

  2. I agree with your point of how Troy is strict with his kids but does it for their own good. Another piece of evidence to back that up would be when Troy is talking to Cory and says " like you? I go out of here every morning... bust my butt.. putting up with them crackers every day.. cause I like you? you about the biggest fool I ever saw" (Wilson 38) because that shows he cares and takes care of his kids not only because he "likes them"

  3. From the start your blog was good. I could see that you definitely put some thought in it. Your elaboration after each quote is good. I like when you said "for example when Lyons came by, he asked to borrow some money and Troy’s reply was, “What I tell you Bono? The only time I see this n***er is when he wants something. That’s the only time I see him”. (Wilson 16) He didn’t want to loan the money to Lyons for multiple reason but eventually he does. The reason this makes Troy angry because Lyons is a thirty four year old man and still comes by asking for money constantly." It shows how you feel about Troy and answers the first part of the question very well. Also when you say "we find out that he is strict about having a job instead of relying on sports is because back in his day he relied on sports but that didn’t work out for him, it even set him back a little." it demonstrates that weaknesses he has as a person. I may be wrong but it seems like you missed the last part of the question which was how has standards of men changed in society. For that what I said is that men now are expected to be the main source of income. That is pretty stereo-typical but it seems like that is how it is. Men are expected to be "macho" and "hold down the fort" in a way that provides for the family. But overall, your blog was well thought out.

  4. I strongly agree with you talking about Troy being strict to his children, but with good reason.Troy can't be lenient with Lyons or he'll keep coming back for more $, nor does he want Cory to play sports because he's had a bad history with baseball. He's faced with tough situations but does manage to be a good father.

  5. I like how your blog post flows. We can see your stance get stronger and stronger as I read along. I like how you mentioned and connected the idea of Troy's past life with Cory's plan to play football. He really might be in the best intention to care for his son because he has had first hand experience with the sports world. I also agree with the fact that he values money and knows the worth of a dollar. The way to supported your opinion with evidence made your stance strong. Nice Job.
