Troy

I believe the expectations in Troy’s’ society’s is that you if you’re not in a state of comfort in the sense of money and wealth of a family but if you were not born with a silver spoon in your mouth then you need to earn your wage through hard work that sometimes isn’t the best work and you can’t complain (i.e. being a garbage man). This is shown in page 40 in fences when troy said “I give you my sweat and my blood. I ant got no tears. I done spent them.” This shows that a man in troy eyes is a person who has responsibilities and take care of his family with hard work and effort.

In my opinion Troy is good man to an extent. In the fact that he cares for his family enough to provide for them, but when it comes to his relationship with Rose I get mixed feelings even though he loves Rose to death “see this woman, bono? I love her so much… I done run out of ways of loving her.so I got to go back to basics” this was said by toy on page 20 of fences but in the beginning when Troy was talking to bono, Bono had asked troy why he was hanging around Alberta and Troy had said to Bono stay out of my business. So when it comes to his strength and weakness I believe he is strong when he has to take care and provide for his family. But is weak when it comes to his relationship with Rose

Nowadays we have certain standards for men but those standards came from the past so there are certain similarities on values  but some do just change over time like in the 50’s it was usually for the man to have the job in the family and be the bread winner. But now in our society today we have better civil rights for woman so there’s equality between genders. But I do believe that Tory can live up to standards that we have.

  1. I like how you talk about men at that time were men because of the way they handled their responsibilities and with hard work.I also agree with you about him being strong in providing for his family but not as much for his son's own emotional needs. Like think about Maslow's hierarchy of needs don't you believe that children need to hear their own father loves them.

  2. I agree with you that Troy isn't a bad man because with Cory for example all he is trying to do is teach Cory the value of money and how important it is to earn your own money so you can buy yourself the fun things like the TV he wants (Wilson 31-32).

  3. I agree with both of you, but I do not believe that Troy could make it in todays society. we have a greater workforce in the less physical sense with women being the main part of it, Troy tells his sons to go out and get jobs, to make some money for themselves and future families, but never once has he told Rose that she needs to get out and start making money. I don't believe that that view of having woman do the work would sit well with a hardworking man such as Troy.

  4. I agree with you that troy isn't that bad man and also Troy isn't a bad man because he is the breadwinner of his family and does what he can to provide for them to make sure that his family and him self are not living on the streets.
