"Happiness"

Happiness in the text “Fences” by August Wilson means you are free from your daily struggles and worries. In the text “Fences” Troy said “I can laugh out loud… and it feels good. It reaches all the way down to the bottom of my shoes (69)”. Troy is able to obtain happiness when he is free from his daily stresses, and he doesn’t want to give this up because it’s what makes him happy. Our society perceives happiness as having money and spending it on nice things or doing what you love to do, it’s over glamorized because happiness can come from anywhere. An accurate portrayal of happiness is that there is no one way to obtain it, there are many different ways to obtain happiness. Happiness is by far a right, there are people in this world that are miserable and there are others that are very happy. These two versions of happiness differ in the sense that you achieve “happiness”, in the text Troy obtains happiness when he’s free from all the work and stress, while in our world you obtain happiness through many means. A person in our world could gain happiness from helping others such as giving to the poor while another person could gain happiness from receiving a paycheck and being able to spend that money on something. These two versions of happiness can overlap because when you’re happy you’re generally free from your worries, while this is not the case sometimes it’s usually true.

  1. I agree with you when you said "Troy is able to obtain happiness when he is free from his daily stresses, and he doesn’t want to give this up because it’s what makes him happy". I also want to add that troy was very selfish and didn't care much about his action and how it would affect his family. He doesn't understand from right to wrong for example even though he slept with a different woman he kept on going about how he didn't know and wasn't a lie ."I done give you everything i got"(Wilson 71). He keeps talking about how he done everything for them but he just works for his family just like any other husband would .

  3. Sam, great post! Though, you may want to triple-check for errors. Additionally, you said, "Our society perceives happiness as having money and spending it on nice things or doing what you love to do, it’s over glamorized because happiness can come from anywhere." I disagree with you on this. I don't believe that happiness is over idealized. Everyone drives to be happy. Happiness is a feeling we all want and will do insane things to reach. Thanks!
