Evaluation of Troy

Troy is a man that is more interested in making money and fulfilling his duties in the world rather than focusing on his children. He comes from a society whom didn't accept African-Americans and where he could not enjoy much of living. Troy is focused solely on his responsibility in the world. "While you thinking about a TV, I git to be thinking about the roof...and whatever else go wrong around here (Wilson)." In the beginning of the conversation between Cory and Troy, Cory suggests his dad buys a TV. This made Troy upset and rumble off about the roof. Troy is more focused on his house and his money instead of having fun. This shows that Troy is a good man when it comes to supporting his family. On the other side he doesn't have much compassion for others. "It's my job. It's my responsibility! You understand that? You live in my house..sleep you behind on my bedclothes...fill you belly up with food...cause you my son. You my flesh and blood. Not 'cause I like you! Cause it's my duty to take care of you (Wilson)." Although he supports his family, he does not care to tell his son he loves him or give him any compassion towards him playing football.  All he wants is his son to be able to support himself.  He cares about his son, yes. He does not in fact want to change his view on the world. He his ignorant to the fact that the world has changed since he was a kid.  He doesn't want his son getting involved in sports when he got shot down. Our current society portrays men as the doer. They work, pay bills, but they also are expected to support their son in sports. They are also more open minded than back then. That is where he faults the most.  I believe that although he is not open minded, he supports his family financially and would break his back to keep a roof over their head.
