Troy Maxson

Troy Maxson - a hardworking man trying to do the best he can for himself and his family. Troy is expected to provide for his son and wife, to bring food on the table and keep a roof over their head. I believe this because Rose and Cory are always looking to Troy when in need, for instance, the time Cory wanted a TV and attempted to persuade Troy into buying one. Troy does fulfill his family duties, giving all he has to carry himself through the week just for his wife and son. He is a good man in the sense that he is wise and believes in his own values. When approached by Lyons, Troy knew what was going on; Lyons was just coming by for $10 and nothing else. Buying a TV on sale for $200 wasn’t even an option for Troy, he had household duties he had to commit to, like getting the roof tarred. Troy knows better than to waste his money or time, but is often strict with his son Cory. Money is tight around the house, and Cory’s been working at the A&P to help out. When Cory decided to play football and cut his hours at the A&P, Troy was furious. Troy wants what’s best for his child but doesn’t give him much choice, it’s either Cory gets his job back full-time or doesn’t play football at all. An evident flaw with Troy would be his lack of flexibility with his child due to his bias with pro-sports, but that’s not something that will change with his stubborn personality.

In today’s society, a man is expected to take care of his family and be there when needed. Troy Maxson is a strong example of that, offering everything he has and wanting the best for his family. “I get up Monday morning . . . find my lunch on the table. I go out. Make my way. Find my strength to carry me through to the next Friday. That’s all I got, Rose. That’s all I got to give. I can’t give nothing else.”(Wilson, 40) When faced with the situation Troy is in, there’s nothing else he can do and that’s shown. Troy does not show as much affection and compassion with his family as someone should, but he understands that the basic needs come first.

  1. Troy is very much expected to provide everything for his family. I also wrote mine on this similar part of his personality and I found it interesting when you stated that "Troy does not show as much affection and compassion with his family as someone should, but he understands that the basic needs come first" I feel that what you said really sums up his personality and shows that although he doesn't express his love like most parents or husbands, he believes that the way to show love is to provide life for his family.

I likes the way you gave a good summary of the acts that we read and also gave an example of a flaw in his tough love personality about his bias towards Cory playing sports. The only thing I disagree with is that today's society is very different. Women are also expected to provide for their families now and this is something that Troy would definitely struggle with if he lived in our time period

  2. I agree with you that Troy is a good man and is a very hard worker when it comes to his garbage man job. He gives everything he's got so that his family can have the best life they can possible have. Troy is also very responsible with his money like you stated. He doesn't give go around and buy what he wants or seems cool at the time. Having a TV would be nice but he knows a tarred roof over their head is more important. I also agree that Troy is super stubborn. "Hank Aaron ain't nobody. That's what you supposed to do. That's how you supposed to play the game. Ain't nothing to it. It's just a matter of timing... getting the right follow through. Hell, I can hit forty-three home runs right now!" (Wilson 34). Troy thinks he could still dominate in the MLB at the age of 53. That's ridiculous! But that's just who Troy is. Although Troy does have a lack of flexibility when it comes to his son. I think his real weakness is that he is to serious and harsh when it comes to his son Cory. Cory loves football and is really good at it. I think it was cruel that Troy made Cory quit the team. I understand that Troy got screwed in sports when he was younger but he doesn't realize that times have changed and "colored" people are now playing professional sports. Cory only gets to play high school sport once in his life and he has his entire life to work. who cares if he doesn't go pro, its his passion. Money is tight around the house but how much is a part time job from a high school kids going to help?. Overall I think Troy is a good man
