No one in the book Fences I can say is truly happy, all the
characters just kind of put up with and make the most of what they have
already. Especially Rose; how she has gone through so much with Troy, having to
raise their first child by herself for the first 15 years because troy went to
prison. She remained the backbone in trying to keep all the family together in
any way she could. Rose made the most out of the very little they had and stuck
by Troy with they very little roof they had over their head. And in our society
happiness to most relies more on the material things rather than what’s within.
We depend on the things we desire for happiness rather than being happy with
the things we have already much like the Troy in Fences. And I do think it is
over glamorized because as a whole we have all lost sight of what happiness is;
happiness isn’t always going out and finding it. We are all entitled and have a
right to happiness, but there is always a right and wrong way about finding it especially
if you have to hurt someone or something in the process. Also I think in the
book and in our world the two do overlap because we all have experienced or
have seen these same kind of situations if not been a part of something similar
where we were unhappy and wanted happiness
I agree with your statement about Rose being the "backbone" and that happiness is deeper. Its clear in fences when Troy goes so far to cheat on his wife for his happiness.
