Happiness
The time the characters lived in was a time of
discrimination and hard work, Troy was the man of the house, he had a lot of
responsibilities, he wasn't rich he was struggling with the money he was a
garbage man and had pressure on him every day. Troy’s view on happiness is having
freedom “'I can laugh out loud...and it feels good. It reaches all the way down
to the bottom of my shoes.” Freedom of responsibilities and not thinking about
how to pay the bills “she gives me a different idea…. I aint got to wonder how I
am gonna pay the bills or get the roof fixed” while his son Cory has a different perspective on happiness for him it's doing what he love which is playing football, in fences happiness seems that it is something you need to sacrifice for like Troy putting his marriage on the edge.
In our society you will find many different meanings to
happiness. Some consider it money, others define happiness as having your dream
job, watching your kids grow up but when you put all these views together
happiness definition to our society will be very similar to Troy’s. It will be
defined as freedom, doing what you love on a daily bases, being able to smile
every day you wake up and being around people you love. I think happiness
should be idealized, it’s not over glamorized, if a person doesn’t pursuit to happiness
in their life then they will find no reason to living like Robin Williams and
many more. What we consider happiness is not the perfect image of our reality
but, it is the perfect portrayal of a perfect reality that we hope we live in
one day. Happiness is a right it’s a right you give to yourself, not wait for
someone to give to you but yourself.
