Happiness

Happiness is something that many people seek to find. In Fences, the meaning of happiness is different for each character. In the latest section that was read, Rose had found out that Troy cheated on her. Troy was running away from his responsibilities and issues. With Troy, it seems that he seeks happiness in places he shouldn’t be going to. He seeks happiness in other places. Troy felt a sense of freedom and adrenaline from going behind Rose’s back, but in the end, the happiness only lasted for that one moment. It was not true happiness that Troy had gotten. After Rose was told, she went on to talk about her wants, needs and dreams. Rose says, “I planted myself inside you and waited to bloom. And it didn’t take me no eighteen years to find out the soil was hard and rocky and it wasn’t never gonna bloom” (Wilson 71). Right here you see that Rose wanted to find true happiness from another person. But she has not found that with Troy.

In today’s society, I think happiness is glamorized. I feel that many people find “happiness” in materialistic things. Everyone wants the nicest and newest things, but these can only give you entertainment and “happiness” for only a short period. People should try to seek true happiness from experiences and loved ones. Happiness is a right and everyone deserves to be happy. If there are negatives in someone’s life, they have the right to eliminate these things and become happy.

  1. I like how you compared all the characters happiness'. "In Fences, the meaning of happiness is different for each character". I also like that you showed a different opinion on the glamorized happiness of society! "I feel that many people find “happiness” in materialistic things. "
