I think that troy is a man that does his job to support his
family by giving them food and shelter. He does not care about a lot of other
things. Troy is the breadwinner in his family “it’s my job. It is my responsibility!
You understand that. A man go to take care of his family. You live in my house
. . . sleep you behind on my bedclothes . . . fill you belly up with my food .
. . cause you my son. You my flesh and blood. Not cause I like you! Cause it’s
my duty to take care of you.”(Wilson 38). Troy thinks that supporting his
family is his duty and responsibility; he does not do it because he feels
compassion for them. Troy as a responsible man that knows how to spend his
money wisely, he knows what he has to do in order to keep food on the table and
a roof over their heads “Naw, it’s just two hundred dollars. See that roof you
got over your head at night? Let me tell you something about that roof. It’s
been over ten years since that roof was last tarred.” (Wilson 32) “Now, how
much you think it cost to get that roof tarred? (Wilson 32) “two hundred and
sixty-four dollars . . . cash money. (Wilson 32). the quote is a conversation
of Troy and Cory in the conversation Troy explains to Cory that buying a TV is
not worth the money because he could get the roof tarred so they can still live
with a roof over their heads.
I agree with your view that Troy is a man who does his job to support his family. It is also very true when you say "He does not care about a lot of other things." Along with those facts I believe that it is also apparent that he does everything because he believes it is what is best for his family. This is clear when Troy says, "I don't want him to be like me" (Wilson 39), after Rose says that Cory is just trying to be like Troy by pursuing a life in sports. He shows that he is truly compassionate about his family and speaks from experience when he tells Cory what to do. Troy is a man that does his job to support his family as you said and along with that he is a man with compassion hidden behind cruel words as shown during the play.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Troy is the breadwinner and has to support his family. That is all he thinks about. I like the quotes that you have used to support your evidence. It shows that he truly does care about his family even though he is harsh because everything he does is to support them.
