Troy Maxson is a hardworking fifty three year old man, who
cares deeply about his family. He has a strong relationship with his wife Rose,
whom he loves very much and is a great father to Lyons and Cory. Although he
argues with both his wife and sons he loves them very much. So much that he
works a terrible job where he is the breadwinner and works long days to support
his family. He is a great friend when with Bono but gets frustrated when he has
to deal with his family, as an individual he seems like a hardworking and
caring man that has too much on his plate, although he does lie quite a bit as
seen on page 11 of the play Fences where he claims he saw the devil. He
dislikes his past history as an athlete because to be played regularly as a
colored man you have to be twice as good as a white man, this is why he doesn't
want his son Cory to go down that road. In the society he lives in it seems as
if there is racism against blacks, even by their own people. For the most part
Troy is a good man, he does what he needs to do and that’s to support his
family. But as Bono said on page 3 of the play Fences: “You been doing more
than eyeing her. You done bought her a drink or two” so there might be
something he isn't telling Rose.
