Troy's Legacy

The legacy that troy left behind was to work hard for what you want and what you deserve. He work hard for what he has and was the one to provide for his family. There was not a time he didn’t provide for his family and he would go the extra mile to help them in whatever they need. Even though he made mistake he made sure that wasn't affecting his family. I believe this because when he tells rose “I always come home, Rose. You know that” (Wilson 73). Its shows that even though she hated him for mistakes he has made, he still showed up to the house and gave everything to them.

Rose was the one who has shaped Troy’s legacy because he would listen and do everything she would ask of him. He respected her so much and knew that she has done lots for the family. She was the one to make sure he felt loved and that he was doing what he was supposed to do and basically kept him on check if she knew he was asking something harsh towards someone or even something that would end up hurting him back for example when she said “Let’s not get off into all that” (Wilson 20). When she tells him to stop talking about Lyon and how he can’t support himself even though his thirty years old, he quits talking about him and lets rose give the money to him.

I believe his legacy was develop when he was on his own. He wanted to become his own person, he didn't have a father to look up to and follow his expectation so he set standards for himself and made sure that the mistake that his father made would never affect him for example when troy says to Cory “Then get the hell out of my face, and get on down to that A&P” (Wilson 38). He wanted to make sure that his son had a better future than having high hopes on football. Towards that end we see that because of troy he doesn't join the football team but rather the marine and he followed his father footstep. Even though he was harsh towards Cory he wanted to make sure he had a good future ahead of him when his father wasn't there.

Towards the end of the story I have notice something that Troy and Cory both create which was that song. Troy ended up teaching Raynell because it was like a tradition for him.

Happiness

In Fences happiness is portray in many ways. Rose is dealing with the betrayal and how dishonest troy was with her. She keeps all of her emotions in without overacting and even though troy was the most loving husband she went on and try to be happy that she even has him. “Don’t you think I had dreams and hopes too” (Wilson 70). She prefer making her family happier than herself. Troy has been getting away with all the problem such as sleeping with other woman. “It’s just… She gives me a different idea… a different understanding about myself” (Wilson 68). Troy doesn't much care about how his actions would hurt his family but rather what makes him feel good and that was the main reason why he went on to sleep with this woman because he felt like he could be himself around her rather than worrying about the house and what needs to be fixed. Cory happiness is portray by him wanting/fighting for a spot to get into the football team but the only thing that in his way is his father. He feels like his dreams are being crushed by him even though he knows that his father would just want him to have a better future than he did.

In our society, happiness is defined by giving and receiving love and kindness from people. In today world happiness is must things to have. “Happiness is a priority. I believe that happiness is the most important aspect in our lives, what people strive for. Mostly what makes people happy is doing what they love and happiness would mean being selfish sometimes and to want something for yourself just like troy did, he went on to sleep with this woman because he felt a happiness for himself rather than doing something for his family.

In the play fences and what society definition of happiness is similar in some ways. For example rose wants her family to be happy which today people want that for their family. Troy is happy with providing the essential needs for his family. The main difference is that in today’s world people are wanting to get as much money as they could to make themselves happy but in reality that’s not true. Buying extravagant things isn't going to make you happy because those materials are going to be done but in the play fences he believes that happiness is what he does for his family and that should be enough for them to know. 

Troy

Troy’s society expects of a man is that a man who can provide and care for the family. It’s expected for a man to be strong and have lots of responsibilities and should be able to take care of his responsibilities. For example in Act one he says “I do the best I can. I come in here every Friday. I carry a sack of potatoes and a bucket of lard” (Wilson 40). He also make sure that he’s son has a good education that could help him later in the future.

As a father and a husband its shows that troy is a very caring person to his kids and to his wife. He is responsible even though he is garbage collector and is fifty-three years he tries to provide for his family no matter the situation. He aims to be a good father to his son and to be a better father than his own father was. He treats Cory in a way that will lead him to success and opportunity later in life and not just babysitting him. One of the most emotional scenes part that showed Troy’s weakness was when he was talking about the war and how his brother got hurts and all they gave him was a metal plate over his head and that’s the only reason they have a place to live and kind of blame himself for the money he is taking from him. “That’s the only way I got a roof over my head…. Cause of that metal plate” (Wilson 28). The part that shows that he is strong is when he tells his own to get his job back at the A&P or to learn how to do something else like fixing a car or building a house. He is very direct and he wants his own to do whatever he says.  

Our current society is different than troy generation. Men and women are now working individually themselves rather than one working and providing for the family. They combine the money they get and share things and pay it together. In today generation it shown that more woman are getting jobs and providing for the money than the man .I do not believe that troy would live up to our standard because he has a strong view point and how men should be the once to provide for them family and want to do things the traditional ways. 

Legacy of August Wilson

August Wilson was one of first and many African- American who wrote dozen of contemporary playwrights. He was a man who liked variety of different music and even some of his friend were very astonished when finding out he listens to German opera. Wilson would try to read enormous of different kid’s book. “Whatever I could get my hands on”. (Kachka) He wrote cycle of plays. He wrote one for every decade and each of his plays connect to one another which was very fascinating to know. Since Wilson was spending most of his time in the library, he would try to read different plays and even though he didn't understand the meaning he would try everything he could to understand the meaning behind each words and sentence. “I still don’t know, but it sounds good” (Kachka). One of Wilson legacy that isn't every physical would be in his play, it reflected on real life and the struggle of African American. Some physical legacy of Wilson would be that there is a theater name after him. He wanted people to notice the different stereotype being used in today’s world and in the 20^th century.

His legacy reveals a larger message about race, power and language intersect in the united by the different African American character he had in his plays which showed the struggle they were going through in those time. I have notice people would want you to talk a certain way because of how you were possibly raised and where you came from. For example in the article “language, power and the performance of race and class it talks about how Obama had African American family but didn't spend most of his time with them but in other hand he lived most his life with his white family and that’s why he “talks White”. “Of what member of the category “African American might look like-so why is he characterized here as half American” (Bailey). People believe that since you have some white in your skin color you should be toward that race rather than just African-American.
