During the entire play his only goal is to have a
family after him that will remember him as a man that did his job and taught his
kids how to be part of the world without worrying of not having money or a
house to stay in. In the begging his only desire was to have his older son,
Lyons, to stop asking him for money and get a job to support his family, “I don’t
know why he don’t go and get him a decent job and take care of that woman he
got” (Wilson 19). Moving forward during the play he wants his younger son, Cory,
to stop playing football as his only interest and get a job to start paying for
himself. Even if Cory does not want to stop playing football and work, but
wants to go to college and succeed in his sport path, Troy decided that his
choice was better for his son and decided to take him out of the team, “Papa
done went up to the school and told Coach Zellman I can’t play football no more”
(Wilson 57). This was the begging of the hard relationships that the two of
them will have and the reason for which Cory will leave the house to join the
Marines.
When Troy died, the only one that carried on the
family and his legacy was Rose, his wife that even if he cheated on, decided to
stay with him and give his daughter a mother. When Troy’s family was going to his
funeral, Cory decided that he was not going because his father never supported
him as a father was supposed to, but Rose remembered him how Troy was just
trying to do the right thing for him and wanted, in his own way, to protect
him, “I’m gonna do her just like your daddy did you… I’m gonna give her the
best of what’s in me” (Wilson 98).
Hello, excellent blog post. I really liked how its broken up into two big paragraphs and each has its own idea behind it. I think its completely fair to say that Rose is the only one who carried on the family legacy because his other sons definitely didn't. - Jose Enciso
ReplyDeleteI disagree and think that his son Cory certainly carries his legacy, at the very least in his strength of character if nothing else.
ReplyDeletei somewhat agree with what your saying but i don't agree with Cory and the others not carrying troy's legacy as rose said on page 97 "You just like him. You got him in you good." and "You Troy Maxson all over again." (Wilson 97 )
ReplyDeleteWhen Rose says about Raynell, “I’m gonna do her just like your daddy did you… I’m gonna give her the best of what’s in me” (Wilson 98). It is clear that Troy played a great role in building Cory’s character that’s why Rose want to do what Troy did to Cory. So we can’t say that Rose is the only one who has carried on Troy’s legacy. Cory is also an excellent example of Troy’s legacy. He is the one who has learnt life lesson from his father and that lesson is Troy’s legacy which Cory will keep with him all his life.
