Troy

Troy is a family man that works for his family because it is his duty. He once was a really good baseball player that never got to play because of the color of his skin. He was always benched and was never allowed on the field even though he was better than most of the players out there.  As a father, try is in my eyes a good father but with poor choices of words that he uses to his kids. He wants nothing but for them to succeed but what he says to them to make them succeed is harsh and hurts majorly. “Who the hell say I got to like you? What law is there to say I got to like you?” (Troy 37). This is an example of what Troy says to his son Cory when he asks his dad if he liked him. But later on in the scene, Troy talks to Rose about how badly he wants him to succeed and be better than him. “I don’t want him to be like me! I want him to move as far away from my life as he can get” (Troy 39). This shows that even though he is harsh, he wants the best for Cory. Overall, Troy is a good man. He is strong in family senses and works hard for the things that he wants and earns and honest wage, but he is weak when it comes to his choice of words. He is very cruel at times and is very hurtful.

  1. I agree with you that Troy is a family mam. He loves his family a lot. But I think Troy doesn't just say hurtful things to Cory, he also does hurtful things to Cory such as making him quit football. Football was something Cory was great at and had a passion for. " You go down there to that A&P and see if you can get your job back. If you can't do both... then you quit the football team." (Wilson 37). Troy doesn't want Corey to play because he is still bitter about the fact that he was never allowed to play in the major leagues because of his skin color and not his ability. Troy doesn't realize times are changing and that more and more "colored" athletes are being allowed to play. He believes there is only going to be pain and frustration that will come from football so there is no reason to be playing now when he could be working and making money. I know he loves Cory and wants the best for him but shouldn't have made him do that. It was pretty cruel.
