Happiness in fences is different for characters in Fences but let’s look at Rose. Rose I believe
views happiness as having a stable relationship with her man, and providing for
kids and not showing anything else except having a sense of the American dream.
I consider happiness to be a thing that people who don’t have responsibilities
only have, when I Troy said to Rose “I can sit up in her house and laugh. Do you
understand what I’m saying I can laugh… and it feels good” (69) when Troy is
with Alberta his responsibilities and his household duties are lifted and he
feels joyous. This goes the same way for his son Lyons who doesn’t have a “Job”
but is a musician and since he doesn’t have any duties he is free to feel
happy.
In our society, I believe happiness and materialism have the
same connotation. What I’m trying to get at is that those who have unnecessary
things in there house believe they are in a state of “blissful happiness” but it’s merely
just an illusion see I think those who have little to nothing still find a
better happiness then those with a materialistic mind. I say this because I witnessed
it myself see I grew up in a neighborhood where people were more creative when
they nothing to work this I think this is because they have more creativity and
this what makes them have endless forms of happiness. Both happiness in our society and fences are very much different, but it depends on your view of happiness but. In my eyes there like fire and ice. Fences shows you that Irresponsibility’s are a form of happiness. While in our society this craze of having the latest thing in fashion, technology, etc… is the form of happiness which in reality is happiness but just a mirage.
I agree with you that happiness and materialism have a connection because we as people are always wanting the newest and best thing out there, but I believe that happiness in the book and real life do overlap because in real life sometimes we try to let others tell us what is going to make us happy like for example when someone has the newest phone out there and they may tell you that you need it because "it's faster" or "it has a bigger screen". Just like in fences when Troy tells Cory football is a waste of time and he needs to get a job so he can financially support himself like when Troy says, "You a bigger fool than I thought... to let somebody take away your job so you can play football. Where you gonna get your money to take out your girlfriend and whatnot? What kind of foolishness is that to let somebody take away your job?" (Wilson 36).
