Troy- Athlete, Husband, "Father"

Troy's definition of a man consists of providing for his family and basic necessities. Troy is clearly a traditional man whose values lie within hard work and dedication. We can see these values when he talks to Cory about his chores, the necessity to fix the roof before splurging on luxuries they do not require like the television that Cory wants so desperately. The two bicker back and forth and are argumentative over the TV and roof, "Naw, it's just two hundred dollars. See that roof you got over your head at night? Let me tell you something about that roof. It's been over ten years since that roof was tarred. See now... the snow come this winter and sit up there on the roof like it is... and it's gonna seep inside... then the wood rot from all that water and you gonna need a whole new roof. Now, how much you think it cost to get that roof tarred?" This exemplifies how Troy is at least responsible when it comes to Fatherhood. He knows exactly what they need to do to get by and he tries to teach Cory this because it is what is required, not what they want. As for my opinion on his character/(good) father, I think he is a failure at this point. I don't find it commendable when a man has the ability to provide for his family but when it comes to being able to provide all the other aspects of being a Father (example, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs), he suffers the incapability of loving his own children, or at least has a significant lack in being able to portray anything but mechanical/angry emotion, "Liked you? Who the hell say I gotta like you? What law is there say I got to like you? Wanna stand up in my face and ask a damn fool-ass question like that... (shoves him on his shoulder)." I feel like he wouldn't be able to fit into today's society too well because of his hostility so far. He does provide for his family, yes; but there is a vast amount of improvement I believe Troy would have to do to prove he is fitting to be today's society's standard.
