Happiness Then Vs. Now

What happiness means to Rose is having a husband that is loyal to her and also faithful to her. “Why, troy? Why? After all these years to come dragging this in to me now. It don’t make no sense at your age. I could have expected this ten or fifteen years ago, but not now.” (Wilson 67) when troy broke the news about him being a father with a different female she broke down because he was the one that kept her going and moving on in life. “You not the only one who’s got wants and needs. But I held on to you, Troy. I took all my feelings, my wants and needs, my dreams . . . and I buried them inside you. I planted myself inside you and waited to bloom.” (Wilson 71). Rose put everything she had into troy and now after 18 years he’s showed his colors to her about what type of man/husband he is.

Back in the 1900’s Things were different you didn't need everything to be happy the main things you needed in the 1900’s to be happy was a loving, caring, and happy family and a place to call home compared to nowadays where people need everything to be happy. If something doesn't go there way they aren't the happiest campers. I think the best description of this would be when Cory was telling Troy to buy a television. “Troy: Two hundred and sixty-four dollars . . . cash money. While you thinking about a TV, I got to be thinking about the roof . . . and whatever else go wrong around here. Now if you had two hundred dollars, what would you do . . . fix the roof or buy a TV? Cory: I’d buy a TV. Then when the roof started to leak . . . when it needed fixing . . . I’d fix it.” (Wilson 32) this showed that Cory was part of the new generation that wants everything even though they can’t afford the TV but they still plan on doing things that they know won’t work out.

  1. I disagree with your point that in 1900's you don't need anything to be happy and now people need everything to be happy. I think at that time you needed everything to become happy. You had to have a lot to survive, and you had to have more to be happy.
