Troy’s society expects of a man is that he’s spouse to be
the breadwinner and which he is in the play. He does his dues in the play “I come
here every Friday. I carry a sack of potatoes and a bucket of lard. You line up
at the door with your hands out. I give you the lint from my pockets. I give
you my sweat and my blood.” Meaning that he does everything for his family that’s
in his power. Is troy a good man I believe he’s a good man because he puts all
his knowledge which may seem like its hyperbole sometimes to work from topics
of work where he was telling his son about quitting football and getting his
job back to something about how sports team treat colored men “I don’t care
where he coming from. The white man ain't gonna let you get nowhere with that
football noway. You go on and get your book-learning so you can work yourself
up in that A&P or learn how to fix cars or build houses or something, get
you a trade. That way you have something can’t nobody take away from you.” I believe
that he is weak at explaining his feeling and that it only goes his way. “I don’t
care what nobody else say. I’m the boss...you understand.” I believe he’s
strong at giving them a life experience so they know why he tells them things
that they don’t agree with such as his son where he was telling him that you
have to be twice as good to be on the team but you will still end up on the
bench. The current standards for men are various most depends on where you live
and what country that you live in if we look at the United states in the south
maybe these standards work but they won’t work in the more liberal states.
I some what agree with your post. I think Troy is a true definition of a man during this time period in the 50's. He supplies for his family and keeps a roof over his family but i think being a man is much more than just that. This isn't Troys fault for not providing more than food and shelter, but he needs to also provide support and pass on values. This is one of Troy's faults that happened to come from the way he depicts society and what he went through striving for his goal to become a baseball player only to get denied. I feel like you could have talked more about what makes Troy not able to really communicate to his sons.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point that Troy is a good man with good intentions and you said "I believe that he is weak at explaining his feeling and that it only goes his way" I don't think it goes his way because at that period of time expressing your feelings was weakness and him not expressing his feelings made people look at him as a strong man. I don't agree with it but at that time that is what he had to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of your points. He is a weak at explaining his feelings. You also bring up a good point that he did live by a more conservative southern standard and now in liberal states he might not be able to make it. Along with that I think he might do better in liberal states because people will pay him his dues. Like he said, "Working everyday and I can't get no credit" (Wilson 15). Then just like you said about the old standards used in his day, "...they won't work in the more liberal states," which is why I believe nowadays we are looking for strong men like Troy.
