“I can laugh out loud...and it feels good. It reaches all the
way down to the bottom of my shoes. (Pause) Rose, I can't give that up”, says
Troy. For Troy happiness is something that make all his problems and pressure go
away. For him happiness is that he can be himself. He just want to care about
himself.
But his happiness clashes with that of Rose’s. His attempt to
be happy is taking away happiness of Rose. For Rose, happiness is just spending
all her life with him. All her hopes are from her husband who is cheating on
her. But on his side he is just being happy.
Society presents happiness as a thing which we need to
search. It makes it a thing which should be prior to everything, which it
should be. It tells you to be selfish for it but it doesn’t allow so. In reality
society won’t let you be the way they define happy person. If we consider Troy,
he became selfish for his happiness. He wanted to be happy so he hooked up with
some other girl. Society “wants” everyone to be happy but it wouldn’t allow him
to cheat on his wife even if he is just trying to be happy.
How this society presents happiness differs a lot from the
reality of this society. When this society presents happiness it considers only
one side of the stance. It doesn’t really thinks that if it is saying a person
to be selfish for his happiness it can take away someone else’s happiness. But
reality considers all of this. In reality this society won’t consider you as a
happy person if you become selfish for it. It will only see you as someone who
is taking away someone else’s happiness. Troy won’t be considered as a happy
person. This society will call him a cheater only.
I agree with you blog and I think you made a really good point that our society defines happiness in a way and then attacks you if you want to be happy but you didn't write anything about should happiness be a right or not
ReplyDeleteExcellent article, Harprit. I enjoyed the part when you opened up with a direct quote from the man himself, Troy and then analyzed his actions, revealing his selfish nature. I don't think Troy is a bad guy, but his actions show differently. What do you think?
