From what I
have read so far, I think that Troy is a good father, a good brother, and a
good husband. Even though Troy yelled at Lyons for asking to borrow money, he
is still a good father because he is trying to teach his 34 year old son how to
make his own money so that he doesn’t always have to rely on Troy. Troy treats
Gabriel like a normal person even though he went through the stuff he did
during the war. Troy is always speaking about Rose in a good way – he is always
telling his friend, Bono, how much he loves Rose. I think that Troy’s society
expects that a man should be able to provide for their family. I think this
because Troy is telling his son that it’s his responsibility to provide
whatever he can for his family. “It’s my job. It’s my responsibility! You
understand that? A man got to take care of his family,” (Wilson 38). During
this scene, Troy is yelling at Cory because he tells his father that he has
clothes to wear, a roof over his head, and food in his stomach because his father
likes him but Troy tells Cory that it’s not because of that, instead it’s
because it’s his responsibility as a man and father of the family to provide
for them the best that he can. I think that Troy is a good man because even
with the society back then when African Americans aren’t allowed to do a lot of
things, he still does all that he can to provide for his family – he will works
wherever he has to so that his family is well-provided for. I think that one of
his weaknesses is always yelling at his family and I think that one of his
strengths is how hard working he is. The standards that our current society has
for men is that they should be able to provide for their family, treat their
wife the right way, and treat their kids the right way. I think that Troy would
live up to these standards because in the play, he treats his family right.
Even though he yells at his kids, I feel like he is only doing so to teach them
about how hard it was to get by each day during that time period so that they
don’t have to go through it the way he does.
I think that you did a very good job in explaining why Troy is a good man, especially when you touched on all ways he is a good man and father. You explained how he treated his wife, his son, his friend, and his brother; which is important because it shows his personality towards all of the people he cares about and supports.
ReplyDeleteI agree, when you said "Even though he yells at his kids, I feel like he is only doing so to teach them about how hard it was to get by each day..." I also believe that although he is yelling at them, he is not doing it to be mean, he is doing it for the greater good of their future since he knows what is best.
You did a good job of explaining why Troy is a good man. By relating it all back to his family, you showed how much he cares for them and protects them. I think that Troy yells a lot because he is trying to teach his family new lessons that are essential for a stable life. In the section where Troy and Lyons are talking, Troy refuses to give Lyons money because he believes he should be working for it himself. "You too lazy to work and wanna know why ain't got what I got." (Wilson17). This helps further develop your belief that Troy works for his money and wants his kids to learn to do the same.
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job explaining all the aspects of Troy as a person - father, husband, brother and man - and how this affect his life. I liked the example that you gave about his responsibilities, shows how his personality is visible from how he approaches life.
ReplyDeleteAlso I agree when you explained our society and how Troy would live in it.
You did a good job of telling us why Troy is a good man. By relating it all back to his family, you explained how much he cares for them and protects them. Also you explained why he wouldn't be very good in our society now a days.
ReplyDeletei feel it is a bit off when you say troy talks to rose in a good way because we have multiple instances when troy seems kind of sexist towards her. i understand that it is farther back on the timeline and women were treated differently then, but he stereotypes Rose as just a "woman" a the says multiple times while talking to Bono or Rose herself. during that time the term "woman" might have been acceptable but nowadays it seems to be an insult to women's dignity and respect as a person.
ReplyDeleteI disagree that Troy would have a good time fitting into today's society. I think he believe's that only men can be the only providers. Especially when he said, “It’s my job. It’s my responsibility! You understand that? A man got to take care of his family,” (Wilson 38). I believe that he would have a hard time comprehending that Women can be providers also, and he would do whatever he could in order to feel as if he was "the man of the house"
