I think Troy’s society expects that a man works and supports
his family in all aspects; financially and emotionally. I think this because
there were many times in the book that mentioned men working and earning money
to support not only themselves, but their family as well. On page 38 when Cory
and Troy are speaking about football and Cory’s job, Troy says “I go out of
here every morning…bust my butt…putting up with them crackers everyday…cause I
like you? You the biggest fool I ever saw. It’s my job. It’s my responsibility!
You understand that? A man got to take care of his family.” This shows that
Troy believes that it is his duty as a man to go out and work every day; no
matter the circumstances and who he has to deal with.
I believe that Troy is genuinely a good man, he goes to work
every day to support his family; he does all he can to keep his family going
and successful in any way. I think he is very strong in his willpower, he knows
what he needs to do and he does it – he is not afraid to tell his son or his
brother something that they need to do even if it sounds harsh. He knows what
is best because of the struggles he has been through, and I believe that this
makes Troy a strong, good man. I think that Troy is weak in the way he
expresses himself, he comes off as a very stand-offish man who will stick to
his word. In the scene when Cory is telling Troy about his new work/football
schedule, Troy says on page 36, “I don’t care what nobody else say. I’m the
boss…you understand? I’m the boss around here. I do the only saying what counts.”
This comes off as very stern, and unmoving, but Troy is just really trying to
express that he knows what is best for his own son and what happens to him
since he lives under his roof.
Our current society has generally the same standards. Our
society believes that men should work and be able to support their family that
it is the men’s job to be out of the house while the woman generally stays
home. But in our current society, things have changed over the years which
allows an acceptance of women working outside of the home; just like men. I
believe in our current society, Troy lives up to the standards.

ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said in your post because there were lots of times in the play where Troy talks about how he is always working really hard to help support his family even though he doesn't like how he gets treated while working. I also agree with you saying that Troy would live up to the standards that our current society has for men today because I feel as if the standards today are pretty much the same as they were back in the days -- men are to support and provide for their family and be the ones to bring food to the table.
ReplyDeleteit is true that he understands that he need to support his family using a stern attitude but doesn't show his emotions all that much through his actions. but we must also look at how he would interacted with others in modern society. Troy would obviously be against women working alongside men due to stereotyping women as "stay-at-home wives" and the feeling that only men are allowed to help finance the family due to traditional roles during his time. it is true that he would fit into his role as a men during our time but would be biased against women.

ReplyDeleteYou did a great job of providing evidence to back up your thinking. I agree with you that Troy does everything he does because of his family. When Troy and Lyons are talking Troy says, "What's the matter, you too good to carry people's rubbish? Where you think that ten dollar you talking about come from?" (Wilson17). This helps prove your point that Troy is willing to do whatever it takes to support and provide for his family.
ReplyDeletenow I do agree that Troy will do whatever he has to do for his family, but he would not fit very well in todays society. the gender roles are changing and as Kelly mentioned with Troy's standoffish approach to life and other people would not cope well with the societal view of woman in the work place. I feel that being who he is as a person having a woman in the workplace would rub him wrong. today we view Woman in the workplace as more efficient workers, but that is because less blue collar jobs are available to American citizens, as manufactures become automated or factories get shipped over seas the men who are used to tough physical labor find themselves out of a job, and women who are more likely to go through college and work a desk job, or other technologically based job would excel more than a man like Troy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement "I believe that Troy is genuinely a good man, he goes to work every day to support his family" I truly believe that he tries the best he can in order to support his family and have the prosper. what like you said, i agree that he would totally live up to his society's standards. but i disagree with your statement of troy living up to today's standards. like you said times have changed, but he would not feel comfortable with working alongside a woman, or having his wife work. “I don’t care what nobody else say. I’m the boss…you understand? I’m the boss around here. I do the only saying what counts.” he is a controlling man, but he truly cares about his family. so therefore i believe that with his constant urge to always be in control with him up in today's society, and he would not be able to peacefully flourish in today's society.
