Men: how society has changed its viewing

The society during Troy’s time expected men to lead the family and get respect for making money for the household and supporting their family, but times now required that they play a part in work along with women while having good relationships in society. If we look at the relationship of Rose and Troy we notice the common setting of that time when the women as stuck at home while the men go out to work or drink. We can see they get along like a couple but the way Troy speaks to Rose would not be tolerated nowadays. Throughout most of the play Troy seems to call Rose “woman” in many occasions while talking to Bono and Rose herself instead of calling her by name, and also in one occasion said “  you go on and powder it up”(Fences,6), and then excludes her from certain conversations based on gender stereotypes. These comments used today would be considered insults compared to that time due to the change in roles for women as they got equal rights and are allowed the same as men have. If troy had said the same thing to Rose in this time he would be considered sexist or rude to women of equal standing and would not receive as much respect. Some women in the past were used to such comments due to the influence of others perspective of women in the household, since the perspective has changed; if people were to bring back these stereotypical roles into modern society, it would cause a negative impact on their reputation and respectability.

  1. I agree with you when you say that the way he speaks to Rose would not be tolerated today because in today's society, you hear men calling their wives by their name and you don't hear them saying "go powder it up". I feel like he always talks to Rose this way and refers to her as "woman" when speaking to other people is because of the way society was back then and he thinks that since he's the one really providing for his family, he's the upper person of the family, he gets to treat her this way, but in today's society, this would not slide.

  2. I believe that you started out very strong in the beginning of your response. You touched on all points of why Troy is a good man in their time period and how some relationships changed in comparison with our current society. But as you went on, you began to change the topic and your response to the prompt became weak since you were not answering the questions regarding how Troy is strong/weak.
I fully agree that if Troy were to speak to Rose, or any woman in the manner that he did in this part of the book, it would be considered an insult and unacceptable; but you should keep in mind the questions to be answered in the prompt instead of drifting off into other topics.

  3. I strongly agree with the second part of your response when you were talking about how it would not be tolerated if men still spoke to women how they did in that time period. It would be a much bigger deal now then before. Before it wasn't even acknowledged for being a insult. You made a good point by saying that but didn't really answer the prompt completely and brought up a different topic even though it was a good one.
