Troy

Troy as father is an okay father because in the society he is a part of he is expected to provide the basic necessities for his family which would be food on the table or a roof over their head, because he is an African American Male. He also has some of the ideals that most African Americans had at the time for their offspring which is that they want their children to do better than them and to find a job that has meaning behind it .Troy tries to instill that into Gabriel when Troy says “the white man ain't gonna let get no where with football no way. You go on and get your book learning   so you can work yourself up in A&P or learn how to fix cars or Build houses”.

Troy is strong when it comes to discipline for example when he says to Gabriel “ni**er , as long as you live in my house , you put that sir on the end of it ! When you talk to me”. Another area were Troy is strong is when it comes to surviving when troy is talking to Rose he says, “Woman … I do the best I can do. I come in every Friday. I carry a sack of potatoes and a bucket of lard. You all line up with your hands out. I give you the lint from my pockets. I give you my sweat and my blood.  However there are areas were Troy is weak he doesn't really know how to show love. an example of that is his son Lyons Troy wasn't around when Lyons was going up so Lyons asks for money as pay back for not being there. Or when Gabriel doesn't feel liked by Troy because he so hard on him and doesn't tell him that he has done a good job.
I think troy would and wouldn't live up to today’s standards for men, the ways he would live up to the standards is that he provides for his family. Also he is around his family for most of the time and disciplines the children in a stern manner. They ways he wouldn't is that most men or fathers say that love their children or support them in whatever decisions that they make.  Another reason why troy wouldn't live up to the standards is because he has a lot of excuses when it comes to certain things rather just doing it or letting it go , most men are just go-getters in current society.

  1. Kaelyn, good post! Just be careful to triple-check for errors. Also, Troy was talking to his son Cory, not Gabriel. I agree with you that Troy would partially fit today's standards and partially not. He is a good father because "he provides for his family" and "is around his family for most of the time and disciplines the children in a stern manner". He does his best. He would need to improve on his emotional availability. Also, like you said, he wouldn't be like today' fathers "that love their children or support them in whatever decisions that they make." Also, Troy "wouldn't live up to the standards" because "he has a lot of excuses when it comes to certain things rather just doing it or letting it go." Overall, nice explanation! Thanks!

  2. Great post! i would agree with how troy wouldn't live up to the standard because he believes that mans should be the ones to provide for the family and i think he tries to explain that throughout the story for example when he says "find my strength to carry me through to the next Friday" (Wilson 40). He does everything he can for his family no matter what.
